Resources > Interview Tips

Irrelevant of what position you are interviewing for; below gives you the guidelines for do's and don'ts or interviewing:

Do...

  • Dress smart! First impressions count; you can be over-dressed but never under-dressed.
  • Research, research and then do some more research – we can't emphasise this one enough (and here's a tip; search for the company's press releases – this will tell you some recent news about the company and the direction it is going in).
  • Show your commitment; they want to know that you really want this job!
  • Make a note of some of your achievements - interviews are not the time to be modest!
  • Prepare your questions – this shows you are genuinely interested in them
  • Smile!!
  • Be nice to everyone within the vicinity of their office – you never know who you might bump into until it's too late!
  • Make sure your online presence, for example your LinkedIn profile is accurate – they will check!

Don't...

  • Be nervous – this is a whole hour to talk about yourself; for most of us that is our favourite subject!
  • Be derogatory about your previous employers – this makes you look worse than them
  • Ask about money, hours of work or holiday time – this is a conversation to be had after the first interview.
  • Be late – this is one of the biggest and most easily rectified mistakes
  • Become aggressive or defensive – people want to know they can talk to you without being careful of what they say
